The 125th New Zealand Chess Congress will be held in Palmerston North from 1st to 12th January 2018. This is a major international event with many overseas players of high standing including Grand Masters attending.

It will be a highly publicised event with television and newspaper coverage.  It presents an opportunity to showcase Palmerston North and the Manawatu region. This is to be held at the Millennium Copthorne Hotel Palmerston North. The 1st and only time Palmerston North has hosted this event was 71 years ago, in 1946-47.

The tournament is being hosted and organised by the Manawatu Knight’s Chess Club, founded in 2013 and based in Palmerston North.

Manawatu Knights, although a small club, has some of the strongest junior players in New Zealand, two international titled players and currently hold the following titles:

·         Five time Under 10 Open and Girls Champion, 2016 and 2017

·         Oceania Junior Champion 2017

·         National Junior Champion 2017

·         Joint North Island Champions 2017

·         12 time New Zealand Correspondence Chess Champion Grandmaster Mark Noble.

It is important that this tournament is a success and being a small but growing chess club we are seeking support from the Palmerston North and Manawatu business community. We cannot do this without your help.

In order for the Manawatu Knights to deliver an outstanding New Zealand Chess Congress in 2018 our plan is to invite several Chess Grandmasters from around the world to participate in the event.  This will allow the opportunity for all participants to gain world titles.

For this to be possible we are looking for sponsorship from businesses in Manawatu.
